When washing your clothes, it is important to protect them from damage. One way to do this is to turn the garment inside out before washing. This will protect the outside and decorative elements of the garment from the mechanical action of washing. It also improves the contact between the detergent and the inside of the garment. Care instructions on the garment should be followed carefully, including avoiding high temperatures that can damage the fibres and fade the colours. Using appropriate detergents and fabric softeners and avoiding harsh chemicals can also help protect your garments. Drying in the fresh air, in a shady place and out of direct sunlight is the gentlest method. For delicate fabrics such as cashmere, wool, silk and normal fabrics such as cotton and linen, hand washing is a safe and gentle option. If you don’t have access to a washing machine or want to be extra gentle on your clothing, hand washing is a good choice. Some washing machines have a delicate wash cycle or a hand wash cycle which provides the same care as hand washing. If a garment is labelled “hand wash only”, it can usually be cleaned using one of these wash cycles.
